EMSA Goes International

We are pleased to announce that the Ethiopian Medical Students’ Association has been accepted as a candidate member of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) at their August General Assembly meeting. IFMSA has over 90 member countries worldwide and is affiliated with the United Nations system. It has also been recognized by the World Health Organization since 1969 as the official international forum for medical students. We believe this alliance will create a multitude of opportunities for Ethiopian medical students to share and learn from other medical students and health care professionals worldwide various ways we can contribute to improve the health care of our communities. It will also strengthen our association by allowing us to tap into the resources and partnerships that IFMSA has built.

Our goal in the coming years will be to develop and strengthen our standing committees in the following six areas:
Medical Education, Public Health, Reproductive Health including AIDS, Refugees and Peace, Professional Exchange and Research Exchange.

We would like to thank everyone that has helped EMSA along the way, including:

Addis Ababa University Faculty of Medicine,
Mr. Damene Hailemariam – Ethiopian Public Health Association
Dr. Enawgaw Mehari - People to People Inc.
Dr.s Caterina Cassalini, and Jan van der Homberg– WHO TB Control Program
Dr. Tadesse Wuhib – CDC Ethiopia
Ms. Marion McNabb – JHU Projects in Addis Ababa
Helen Fikre

We also want to thank all of you who have sent us words of encouragements that have been invaluable in our work – we appreciate your input!
